Synesthesia is an interactive sensory installation. It is a mechanized living organism. The systems inside act as optic nerves, taking in and processing information. Lighting and auditory effects elicit curiosity and encourage users to peer inside the eyes of the fabric veil. Inside, glimpses of the inner workings are revealed. The user’s eye is recorded and abstracted onto the membrane without their knowledge. The user leaves without ever realizing their data has been projected. Synesthesia was conceptualized by Loukia Tsafoulia and Severino Alfonso as part of Jefferson University’s Synesthetic Research and Design Lab. Students facilitated the design of structural components and lighting effects as an exercise in fabrication. The installation will be in exhibited at the Venice Biennale in May of 2021.
